The Butcher

One of the original members of Nightmare's Pantheon. Horror — or "Axe", used relatively interchangeably — originally joined the terrorist group to escape a universe doomed to famine and cannibalistic infighting, but in an ironic twist of fate, ended up developing his taste for human flesh mere weeks after the victorious end to his 10-year fast. Among his teammates, Horror is most infamous for his mercuriality, with a hairtrigger temper even more delicate than the cruel and terrifying "traps" he jerryrigs for raids... but bizarrely, it's difficult to say when, exactly, this is the case. After all, he's almost never seen without one of his coworkers... and to them, that icy temperament seems thawed into a paranoid, terrifyingly intense "loyalty", instead. It's just too bad that he expects them to meet the same standards.Axe's talents are more-or-less delegated to crowd control. The traps he designs — cruel amalgamations of rusted sheet metal, copper wire and cheap plywood — are explicitly designed to incapacitate rather than kill... a perfect tool if you need to keep people from running away from an area.

Origin Point

Axe is from TAU-HT 821147518 — an unusually long-lived variant of HORRORTALE that survived at least 10 years of famine before he finally escaped it. Axe spent the majority of his life there a beloved, well-respected member of Snowdin’s community, having worked as one of the main electrical engineers during the CORE's construction and, as the years saw it aging, occasionally contributing to its repair. However, after his universe’s Catalyst completed an imperfect neutral run, killing King Asgore and forcing Undyne to take the throne, his universe was unlucky enough to see the CORE’s inevitable failure in their lifetimes. When increasing scrutiny and desperation fell upon Queen Undyne to fix it before monsterkind fell to starvation, her gaze obviously fell to Axe — and when Axe not only couldn’t fix it but refused to be a martyr by offering up his eye of power in attempt to jumpstart it, she decided to take it by force, fully intending to kill him in the process. The trouble is, in her haste to save the Underground, she neglected to actually learn how Axe's eye of power worked... and instead of martyring him for the greater good, she instead watched as her enraged, grievously-injured ex-friend smashed what remained of the temporarily-restored CORE before retaliating further by lobotomizing Alphys — Undyne's lover, and the only other complicit contributor or witness to his betrayal....However, due to the public’s golden perception of Horror and the obvious proof of her implicity, Undyne could not risk outing him without also shaking the foundations of her already tenuous rule. So instead, she started a vindictive smear-campaign against him while he returned to Snowdin to attempt to pick up the pieces of his life that remained... and, of course, to figure out what to do about having doomed monsterkind anew. His solution? To eat the humans that fell into the Underground — and as their society crumbled around them, to begin entertaining themselves with increasingly elaborate, violent, horrifying “traps", not just against their new prey or the guards that Undyne tried to send, but eventually against anyone who tried to enter Snowdin, period. Thus marked the division of TAU-HT 821147518's Underground; an unspoken civil war led by their most tenacious survivors, reshaping what remained of monsterkind into cruel, gargantuan shadows of the love, hope and compassion they'd known before.Fortunately for Axe, a monster willing to go to such horrifying lengths to survive and thrive was exactly the type of man Nightmare was looking for, earning him and his brother their tickets out. Unfortunately, Axe's willingness to abandon the Underground at the first sign of greener pastures did not sit quite as well with his brother, who wanted to stay to support their remaining "family"... and the resulting
falling-out saw him moving to neutral world TAU-FT 15119919 while Horror joined Nightmare, where he promptly began shutting down any mentions of his previous world at all.
...It's little surprise, of course. If there were ever a universe with a fitting moniker, it's definitely Horrortale.

main ability: eye of undying

While it's not necessarily uncommon knowledge that Axe's iconic blood-pink, engorged "eye light" wasn't originally his eye at all, few know that his original eye of power is still safely hidden somewhere in Multiverse TAU, nor what that implies. While Axe is certainly more than capable of permanent injury — proven by the hole in his skull and its side-effects, which he still manages to this day — he's also incapable of truly dying as long as his eye remains intact somewhere. Instead, any mortal injury he receives will temporarily force him into a comatose-like state until his SOUL can forcibly reconstruct his body back to a state capable of holding life — that is, 1 HP or higher.Of course, the complications borne from his head injury have not only significantly impacted his health and magic stores, but have basically removed his ability to use long-range spells with any accuracy, forcing him to rely entirely on close-range combat. To compensate, he's begun creating mechanical traps designed to maim and incapacitate his victims without killing them... buying him the time he needs to catch up with a target or potential meal.

trivia

  • Only speaks English (the only monoglot on the entire team </3)

  • From a stylistically altered AU (slightly sepia/desaturated)

  • Taps his fingers when he's nervous or agitated, or else pulls on the inside of his skull (via mouth, sockets or head injury)

  • Has (roughly) the monstrous equivalent of aphasia — a disorder typically caused by traumatic brain injuries. He can comprehend speech and writing, but he himself struggles to do either

  • Understandably, gets frequent migraines, as well as brief but frequent waves of full-body cold, numbness and pins-and-needles

  • His crippled leylines means he struggles to control his strength when gripping things (a pair of leather gloves helps w/ this), but also means he struggles to summon any form of ecto-construct

  • One of the only members of his team whose role directly corresponds with his actual work history, aside from Cross

  • Blind in his right eyesocket, and cannot fully open it

  • Responsible for the castle's extremely rigid food schedule

  • (Does basically all of the castle's cooking, as well, which has spread... certain rumors about what he might be feeding them)

  • Dislikes most domestic animals

  • Hates children, especially the younger ones

  • Sadistic bastard; mostly prefers psychological torment

  • Extremely loyal to the few people he'd consider "family"... but expects them to meet the same standards, often for worse </3

  • The most "biological" on his team; bleeds real blood, not DT. In fact, regular human organs can survive a few hours inside his torso — a fun little party trick apparently unique to him

  • Hates it when people call him dumb. (Or when he thinks they are)

  • Sleeps around like nobody's business
